North America by yacht

In short

North America's charter coasts are mostly summer ones: New England's islands from late June to mid-September, and Alaska's Inside Passage in summer. Florida and the Keys are the winter end, December to April, next to the Bahamas. US law narrows which yachts may carry guests.

North America's charter coasts are mostly summer destinations. In July and August, when the Caribbean is in its hurricane season, yachts head north to New England's islands or up the Pacific coast to Alaska's fjords. Florida and the Keys are the winter end, next to the Bahamas.

Where to go

  • New England. Newport, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and the coast of Maine, from late June to mid-September. Sailing towns, cool water, lobster and sandy beaches.
  • Alaska. The Inside Passage and Glacier Bay, in summer. Whales, bears and glaciers.
  • Florida and the Keys (page to follow). Miami, the Keys and the Gulf coast, mostly in winter, and the usual start for a crossing to the Bahamas.
  • The Pacific Northwest and British Columbia (page to follow). The San Juan Islands, Desolation Sound and the coast north of Vancouver, in summer.
  • California (page to follow). San Diego, Santa Barbara's Channel Islands and the coast.
  • East Coast Canada (page to follow). Nova Scotia and the Maritimes, in summer.

One thing to know

Under US law, a vessel may carry passengers between US ports only if she holds a US coastwise endorsement (46 U.S.C. 55103). Most foreign-flagged charter yachts do not, so in US waters the choice of yachts is narrower than in the Mediterranean. The US Virgin Islands are the exception: the coastwise laws do not apply there (46 U.S.C. 55101). We propose only yachts that can legally do the route.

The yachts

Which yachts may take charter guests in US waters depends on US law and on each yacht's flag (see above). We confirm which yachts are eligible before any are shown here. We look further for every enquiry here. The yachts on this site are a selection, not the limit of what we arrange: ask about any yacht, of any size.
